Hello, thanks for stopping by!
I am Joanne Scrace, known around the web as Not So Granny. Why? I was fed up of the Nanna image that knitting and crochet had when I was starting out – I knew I could make beautiful, fashionable items – crochet isn’t all granny square waistcoats and knitting doesn’t have to be dodgy Christmas sweaters. My designs focus on stylish wearable pieces, usually with a seamless construction, often vintage inspired but always with a fresh modern feel. I love working with beautiful yarns to design items that will last – the perfect antidote to fast fashion.
I have been designing knitting and crochet patterns for magazines and yarn companies since 2011. My work has been widely published in magazines including The Knitter, Inside Crochet, Knit Now, Yarnwise and Simply Crochet. I have also worked with yarn companies including Malabrigo, Artesano, Knit Picks and Dream In Color. Passionate about introducing the market to fashionable, wearable crochet I launched thecrochetproject.com with Kat Goldin in 2012. My Ravelry portfolio can be viewed here.
I really enjoy teaching knitting and crochet classes – you can read more about this here.
As well as teaching and designing I freelance as a crochet tech editor, (Wondering what that is? Read this post.) having worked for magazines including Simply Crochet, Inside Crochet and Crafty Magazine; Crochet at Play by Kat Goldin (published by Kyle); The Crochet Project; and independent designers such as Kat Goldin, Anniken Allis and Sara Lora.
On top of all this I am a mum to three small children who keep me more than busy! They also inspire me and I wouldn’t be designing if I hadn’t had them. When they were tiny I knitted and crocheted to soothe and distract myself. Also, the desire to be able to be at home with them and share the majority of the childcare with my lovely husband is the driving force behind my self-employment.
I’ve always done a wide variety of crafts for fun and relaxation including crochet, knitting, beaded jewellery, silversmithing, cross stitch, embroidery and sewing. I love learning new crafts.
A Suffolk girl at heart I now live just a tiny hop from the border on the edge of the flat, flat fens. The local landscape and nature often inspire my designs.
So that’s the main stuff. If you want to read the more obscure facts about me then you might like this post.
